String or Micro: Which Inverter is Best For You?

When the sunlight hits your solar panels, this direct current (DC) is sent into your inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC) that is used by the appliances in your household. Of all the components, the inverter is the key to the safety, efficiency, reliability and usability of your system. You can have the best solar panels available, but if your solar inverter is of poor quality, overall system performance can be greatly impacted. Lesser quality solar inverters will often feature poor seals, shoddy circuitry and may also heat up more than a good quality inverter; all of which may impact efficiency and the serviceable life of the unit. In this article, we touch on some of the key considerations in choosing an inverter and also discuss the pros and cons of string versus micro-inverters.

The Commercial Solar Enemy: Time

All businesses, whether for-profit or non-profit, large or small, have one common goal: reduce operational expenses and increase their bottom-line. More businesses are realizing that solar can help achieve this goal by transforming non-performing assets such as rooftops or parking lots into energy producing, money generating facilities. Ownership should be your first option.

Over the last three years, the residential solar space has seen growth rates over 50%. More homeowners are turning to solar as a viable energy option because most can save over $50,000 over the next several years. There are two other reasons we have seen such growth: 1) the federal investment tax credit of 30% on the gross system price is set to expire on December 31, 2016, and 2) utility companies, like APS, are doing everything they can to stump ratepayer savings, job growth and energy competition – allowing those that go solar now to be grandfathered in under existing, better solar policies and rate structures. These monopoly utilities – charging between $0.15 and $0.25 per kWh in some rate schedules – are finally facing competition and know they cannot compete with YOUR power – charged between $0.03 and $0.05 per kWh in most instances – so they want you to use only theirs.

Why an overlooked process gives energy consumers a big wait time and what you should know.

When going solar, the “interconnection process” is the step at which an electric generating facility, such as your new solar system, is connected to and supplies the electrical grid with power. Similar to the permitting processes, this step can present major obstacles to getting a project completed on time, which means a longer waiting period before you can begin saving money. Different solar installers have been known to install in as little as 30 days to as long as 6 months. What’s the hold up here? As more solar photovoltaic systems are installed, municipalities and installers face numerous challenges to ensure an efficient process. Across Arizona, many municipalities struggle to keep up with the increased number of installation inspections, inspectors may not be familiar with certain types of installation methods or compliance with code requirements, and installers may not be aware of the elements that need to be verified in order to pass a thorough inspection.
